Following the REF pause in December 2025, the formerly proposed People, Culture and Environment (PCE) element was replaced by a new Strategy, People and Research Environment (SPRE) element. SPRE assesses how universities create conditions that enable people to conduct world-class research. SPRE contributes to 20% of the overall REF submission score.
