Our Advanced Chemical Engineering MSc programme has been developed to give you a solid understanding of recent developments in the global chemical industry by focusing on advancements of information technology, process and product design, and process development and optimisation.

Compulsory modules

The module is designed to develop the student's understanding of principles and application of modelling of chemical systems.
To give the students a critical appreciation of the use of relevant software tools for modelling and analysis of complex chemical engineering systems.

The aims of this module are to:

Develop skills to critically review the literature and apply them to scientific and engineering problems;
Develop knowledge and understanding of data analysis techniques and their application;
Gain an understanding of and how to apply the ideas to measure unknown quantities.

Optional modules

The aims of the module are to:

Understand the fundamentals of single and multi-phase fluid mixing processes and particle-particle mixing
Gain an understanding on the design and operation of industrial mixing processes
Gain an understanding on the scale up of industrial mixing processes to be able to take formulated products to market
Acquire knowledge on the ways in which mixing affects product properties

The aims of this module are to:

To develop an understanding of the principles of Drug Delivery and Targeting
To give practice in the selection and modelling of drug delivery devices

The aims of this module are:

To obtain an understanding of the concept of process intensification and how they can be used to improve the cost-effectiveness, efficiency, energy use,
environmental impact and safety of a process or unit operation
To apply process intensification strategies to selected process applications such as chemical and biochemical reactions, separation and dispersion processes
To gain knowledge and understanding of a range of intensification technologies which can be used for improving the cost-effectiveness, energy use,
environmental impact and safety of processes and unit operations, such as reaction, separation and dispersion processes
To obtain a knowledge of a range of applications, both existing and potential, for process intensification technologies

Compulsory modules

The aims of this module are:

To apply principles and practices of chemical engineering and to integrate knowledge through an in-depth design study of an individual piece or small grouping of equipment.
To gain an in-depth understanding of the principles underlying various techniques of single objective, multi-objective, dynamic and steady state optimisation.
To develop systematic and rigorous approach to solve advanced optimisation problems that may be encountered in process and plant design and operation.
To acquire a critical awareness of the difficulties and limitations associated with the mathematical optimisation and inherent design compromises.

The aims of this module are:

To examine the various stages in the design of chemical, biochemical and biomedical products
To consider a generalised methodology for identifying needs, generating and selecting ideas, designing a manufacturing process for chemical, biochemical and biomedical products and getting the product to market.

The aims of this module are:

To give experience of a substantial research project
To give training and insight into research methods
To impart the importance of safety issues related to practical work in the laboratory.

Optional modules

The aims of this module are:

to introduce and develop the key principles of enterprise resource planning (ERP)
to introduce the fundamental concepts of supply chain management (SCM) in the context of ERP
to provide an understanding of the role of ERP systems in the effective management of organisational processes
to provide hands-on experience of SAP, an industry standard ERP software.

The aims of this module are:

To develop a good understanding of the application of Colloid Science in a range of Chemical Engineering processes.
To introduce and/or reinforce the student's knowledge of molecular interactions manifestation in the colloidal domain and how colloidal phenomena are manifested in the macroscopic world.

The aims of the module is to develop an in-depth understanding of the theory and practice of batch and continuous downstream unit operations employed by the pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical and biochemical industries.

The aims of this module is to give students an in depth knowledge of the engineering and biological principles of the industrial production of a range of biologic or biologically-derived products by fermentation and cell culture.

The aims of this module are:

To enable students to gain an in-depth knowledge of the science and engineering principles of clean chemical energy conversions, primarily the electro-chemical energy storage and conversion, including batteries, capacitor, hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, bioenergy utilisation and carbon dioxide utilisation.
To enable students to understand the application of battery, fuel cell and hybrid systems as an enabling clean energy technology for a wide range of applications including transportation, stationary and portable power applications.
To enable students to gain insight into the sustainability of processes, particularly life-cycle assessment and safety.

Dr Brahim Benyahia

Professor in Chemical Engineering

After education, Brahim worked as a Postdoctoral Associate at MIT, USA and focused on developing the first end-to-end continuous pharmaceutical manufacturing plant. Currently, he is leading several major research projects focused on Digitalisation and Sustainable Pharmaceutical Manufacturing.

Professor Eileen Yu

Professor of Electrochemical Engineering

Joining 色狗导航 in 2020, Eileen holds a Chair of Electrochemical Engineering in the Department of Chemical Engineering. Her research group focuses on novel bio-electrochemical systems for healthcare, CO2 utilisation and energy and environmental applications.

Dr G眉l Ozcan-Taskin

Senior Lecturer in Chemical Engineering

G眉l spent 20 years in industry where she set up, managed and actively contributed to multi-partner, multi-disciplinary R&D and consultancy as well as industry-based PhD projects prior to joining 色狗导航. Her research relates to mixing and dispersion, including energy-intensive processes.
