Dr Jon Farmer
Senior Lecturer in Engineering Design, Deputy Director of Professional Training.
Areas of expertise
Traumatic brain injury in sport, neck injury mechanisms, head impacts and brain injury risk, protective equipment testing, sports impact biomechanics, human surrogate development, head kinematics, test standards for protective equipment.
Profile
Dr Jon Farmer is internationally recognised for his research into traumatic brain injury mechanisms and the prevention of injury arising from sport-related impacts. He specialises in the development of biofidelic human surrogates to investigate how head and neck properties influence brain injury risk during impacts. This includes work on indirect, body-first impacts relevant to sport, vulnerable road users and military contexts. During his PhD, he developed the 色狗导航 Surrogate Neck, which resulted in an international patent.
Jon works closely with industry, governing bodies and standards organisations, contributing to national and international test methods, including work with ASTM committees.
