Professor Matthew Pain
Professor of Biomechanics
Areas of expertise
Biomechanics, human movement, neuromuscular control, injury mechanisms, impact biomechanics, motor control, performance in combat, contact and power based sports.
Profile
Professor Matthew Pain’s research develops a greater understanding of maximal human performance and injury mechanisms during dynamic movements, examining the biomechanical and neuromuscular factors that underpin actions such as sprinting, jumping, weightlifting and impact events. He provides expert comment on how the body responds to impact and how neuromuscular control influences force transmission and energy dissipation, with applications to combat, contact and power-based sports as well as concussion research.
Matthew contributes to television and radio programmes, including BBC Horizon, National Geographic and the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures and has presented research at public venues including the Science Museum.
