This is part of our information on academic changes and Student visas.
If part of your studies will be undertaken away from the UK the University will generally continue to sponsor your Student visa throughout, provided you will be returning to resume attending studies in the UK*. Common examples include taught students taking a semester or more on exchange or on overseas placement, a doctoral researcher collecting data or completing field work overseas.
Via your school administration the Doctoral College Office or Student Records will have to continue to monitor ongoing engagement with studies. Typically, doctoral researchers will continue to maintain regular supervisor contact. Overseas host providers will be required to report on taught students’ attendance. If a taught student is taking a work placement overseas similar monitoring arrangements will be made with the placement provider.
The Doctoral College Office/Student Records will report to UKVI the relevant details and period of any approved temporary location of studies.
These arrangements will ensure UKVI are aware of why you may be away from the UK for an extended period during your course. This should also mean your visa permission stays in place and can be used to return to the UK to complete the remainder of studies later.
*If you are completing the final stages of study overseas the Doctoral College Office/Student Records may then withdraw visa sponsorship as it will no longer be required to support study in the UK. The withdrawal of visa sponsorship can lead to the cancellation of remaining Student visa permission, it would also preclude the Academic Registry from being able to confirm any eligibility for Graduate Route after any degree is subsequently awarded. If you wish to return to the UK for another reason, eg attend a graduation ceremony that may be done as a visitor or under any other visa route applicable to your circumstances.
